A delightful combination of bookstore and café. The bookstore is long on technical books, or technical takes on every other genre. For example, they have a children's book, Goodnight Lab, an homage to Goodnight Moon featuring science labs. The café has the usual range of teas, coffees, and pastries. There are tables scattered throughout, which people use for eating, working or reading.

Very community oriented; recurring events fill the bar with a big crowd, such as weekly video game nights on Wednesdays, meetups for leather, furry, or nudist groups, and monthly dances with dress codes such as fetish gear or underwear.

In the 1950s, they were beatniks, in the 1970s, they were hippies, who knows what they're called today, but they still hang out here. Great for philosophical discussions, working on your Ph.D thesis, and wireless internet access.

Well lit bar below a coffee house and book store. The entire bar is wood paneled, with tables being cross sections of trees. All day happy hour on Sundays. On the north end of the U-dist.

Cafe Solstice

This cafe is features coffee from Lighthouse Roasters and baristas with attitude. The atmosphere is subtly hip (with music such as Aphex Twin playing in the background) and is usually packed with students from one of the neighboring universities. Also serves homemade soups, sandwiches and pastries.

Caffe Fiore

An organic coffeeshop three blocks north of Kerry Park, offering a true experience of Seattle coffee house culture: good local art on display that changes on the first day of every month, consistently excellent coffee, environmental consciousness to a fault (the straws are compostable), and neighborly vitality that's easy to witness but hard to describe. Handsome baristas remember the orders of regular patrons, and most everyone you see is a regular patron. The coffee is rich, aromatic, and consistently excellent. Outdoor seating for sunny summer days. The most common order is a short latte, and for good reason.

A hip/retro vibe permeates, a great place for drinks, but the food is good, too. Different things like steelhead and marshmallows over a flame.

A weird cross of dive bar and trendy spot, the ambiance of their old location was successfully transplanted to this location after their former building was razed for yet more condo construction. Your bartender may have had an album in the charts circa 1992.

College Inn Pub

The classic student haunt, serving thick ales and tasty chili.

Cyclops

Good, hip (but not ultra-hip) bar, and not a bad restaurant either. Interesting neo-retro decor. The Ace Hotel is upstairs. Excellent breakfast.

DeLuxe Bar and Grill

Dark, but appealing for a beer, stiff drink or bar food (hearty burgers, thick fries, etc.) More restaurant than bar.

Diller's Room

Classic cocktail bar with a historic vibe and extensive drink selection. Happy hour is from 4PM to 6PM with $1 off drinks and $12 pizza.

Earl's on the Ave

Pours the strongest drink on the Ave. Mondays are $4 Long Islands. Home of old geezers and Greek collegians, and has an excellent kitchen.

A variety of locally brewed, certified organic beers are the main draw as well as a great selection of burgers and sandwiches.

Local brewery with large outdoor beer garden (Urban Beer Garden) as well as an indoor area. Has a wide area of beer available for pickup as well as dine-in.
