How Locrawl works

Locrawl collects the places in a city worth your time and puts them on one page, with a map, so you can plan a day in a few minutes instead of a few hours.

Where the listings come from

Most listings come from Wikivoyage, the free travel guide written by travellers and locals. Locrawl reads each city guide and its neighbourhood pages once a week and keeps the sights, activities, places to eat, bars and markets. Hotels and transport are left out on purpose.

To cover the places the guide misses, Locrawl also reads open map data: OpenStreetMap, mapped by volunteers who know their streets, and Overture Maps, an open dataset of places. Only things worth doing are kept: sights, parks, galleries, cafés, bars, independent restaurants and markets. Chains, offices and services are left out. When the same place appears in several sources we merge it, which also fills in map locations, opening hours and websites the guide did not have. Well-known places without a write-up get the opening lines of their Wikipedia article.

Places the guide recommends, places people tell us about and places famous enough to have Wikipedia articles in many languages are listed first. When a listing disappears from its source it disappears from Locrawl on the next refresh. Every place links back to where it came from, so you can check it or improve it there.

Tips from locals

Anyone can suggest a place. A person reads every tip before it is published. We turn down adverts, duplicates and anything we cannot verify. Published tips are marked “Local tip” and credited to the name you give.

What Locrawl does not do

No paid placements, no ratings bought or sold, no tracking cookies. The only cookie on this site is the sign-in cookie our moderators use.
