Elliott Bay Book Company

In 2010, Seattle's largest independent bookstore moved up onto the Hill from its old home in Pioneer Square. The wide, wooden-shelved spaces are a pleasure to browse. There's a small cafe tucked in the back of the lower level, which is good but rather expensive.

Filson Flagship Store

On the 2nd floor of the headquarters building. The 6,500-square-foot store features historic artifacts from Pacific Northwest industry and limited-edition items not available anywhere else.

Gargoyles Statuary

A unique shopping experience for Gothic or history buffs, this store is replete with atmosphere and has one of the most creative product displays in the area. Authentic replicas of medieval, Romanesque and Gothic statuary peak out at you from all corners of this shop while ambient strains of Gregorian chant or 'Dead Can Dance' play over the store's sound system.

Made in Washington

Sells all kinds of souvenirs exclusive to Washington state. Along with the usual coffee mugs and fridge magnets, they also sell glass sculptures you can find at the Chihuly Arts and Glass, baked salmon, artisan chocolates and the rain-globe, an equivalent to a snow globe but adapted to suit the stereotypical Seattle drizzle. They also have another shop in Westlake Center.

A toy shop mainly for bookworms & brain teasers, and the artsy.

Metsker Maps

One of the last remaining map stores in the U.S., with a presence in Seattle since the 1930s. The store is covered wall-to-wall with all kinds of maps local and worldwide, the shelves are crammed with globes and atlases and travel books, and cabinets of posters and prints are rewarding to sift through.

A mall that existed since the 1950s, that is now transitioning to a large mixed-used development.

This 5-floor shopping mall is anchored by a large AMC movie theater and Din Tai Fung restaurant on the top floors. While the mall once featured upscale brands, it is now a little sparse, with mostly galleries and independent businesses.

REI Flagship Store

Recreation Equipment Inc., the large outdoors equipment retailer, was founded in Seattle in 1938. REI's sprawling flagship store has an outdoor trail for test-driving mountain bikes, a climbing wall, and a small "mountain" in the shoe section for trying hiking boots. It also has a clearance section where you can often find boots, down sleeping bags, tents, etc. with easily repairable damage at a fraction of the cost.
