Gwaneumsa Temple

관음사

A peaceful Buddhist temple located within Mungyeongsaejae Provincial Park. Founded during the Silla Dynasty, Gwaneumsa is dedicated to the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteśvara (Gwaneum). The temple is known for its quiet mountain setting, stone pagoda, and panoramic views of the valley below. In spring and autumn, its surroundings are particularly beautiful with blooming azaleas and colorful foliage.

Getting there: From Mungyeong Station, take bus No. 61 or 70 toward Mungyeongsaejae Provincial Park and get off at the park entrance stop. Walk about 15 minutes along the left-hand trail leading toward Gwaneumsa Temple. The temple is nestled in the foothills of Mt. Juheulsan within the park.

Mungyeongsaejae Provincial Park

Mungyeongsaejae is one of Korea’s most famous historical mountain passes, once serving as the main route between Seoul and Yeongnam during the Joseon Dynasty. The provincial park is home to well-preserved stone gates, traditional inn replicas, and scenic forest trails. The area also hosts the Mungyeongsaejae Drama Set, used for filming historical dramas. The 6.5 km trail through the pass offers gentle hiking, especially beautiful in autumn when the maple leaves turn red. Another option is to start at the north end of the trail. This entails, by car, parking a fair bit below the road's end and walking (all uphill) from there. Or, take a local bus from Suanbo or Yeonpung and walk the 3–4 km, all uphill, to the Saejae pass. Sites include a movie set a ways up the trail, a traditional Korean village - the southern part has grass roofs, the northern part is where the yangban live (or would live if anyone lived there), a museum near the park entrance, and three stone gates. There's a nice mineral spring, Jagok Yaksu, partway up the trail.

Mungyeong Saejae Brewery
문경새재양조장
A local brewery producing traditional Korean rice wine and omija-based liquors. It is best known for Mungyeong Saejae Makgeolli, made with locally sourced omija and spring water from the nearby mountains. Visitors can sample products and purchase bottled drinks at the small on-site shop. Tours of the brewing process are occasionally offered for groups with advance reservation.

Mungyeong Traditional Tea Bowl Festival
문경찻사발축제
An annual cultural festival celebrating Mungyeong’s long tradition of ceramic craftsmanship. The event features exhibitions by local potters, hands-on pottery workshops, tea ceremonies, traditional performances, and markets selling handmade tea bowls and crafts. Visitors can try making their own pottery or enjoy local tea in scenic surroundings at the foot of Mungyeong Saejae. The festival attracts thousands of visitors from across Korea and abroad each year.

문경관광사격장
A modern shooting range offering live-fire and clay shooting experiences in a safe and controlled environment. Visitors can try pistol, rifle, or clay target shooting under the supervision of certified instructors. Safety gear and ear protection are provided.
