Mungyeongsaejae Provincial Park

문경새재도립공원

Mungyeongsaejae is one of Korea’s most famous historical mountain passes, once serving as the main route between Seoul and Yeongnam during the Joseon Dynasty. The provincial park is home to well-preserved stone gates, traditional inn replicas, and scenic forest trails. The area also hosts the Mungyeongsaejae Drama Set, used for filming historical dramas. The 6.5 km trail through the pass offers gentle hiking, especially beautiful in autumn when the maple leaves turn red. Another option is to start at the north end of the trail. This entails, by car, parking a fair bit below the road's end and walking (all uphill) from there. Or, take a local bus from Suanbo or Yeonpung and walk the 3–4 km, all uphill, to the Saejae pass. Sites include a movie set a ways up the trail, a traditional Korean village - the southern part has grass roofs, the northern part is where the yangban live (or would live if anyone lived there), a museum near the park entrance, and three stone gates. There's a nice mineral spring, Jagok Yaksu, partway up the trail.

Getting there

From Mungyeong Station, take bus No. 61 or 70 toward Mungyeong Saejae Provincial Park. Get off at the last stop (Saejae Park Entrance). The park entrance is about a 20-minute drive from the station.
