A brewery and a bar with quality beers. The food menu includes Viennese classics as well as standard American bar food like burgers, chicken wings, and BBQ ribs. 1516 particularly caters to American and British expats, although it's also popular among Viennese locals.

Alt Wien

This cafe/restaurant/bar is on a very medieval-looking lane in the central district and is a time warp of another kind: its folky-bohemian atmosphere could convince you that you're in North Beach or Greenwich Village, circa 1967. Liveliest late.

Badeschiff

An orange boat. All sorts of events and parties go on here, and in summer you can take a dip in the outdoor pool-barge during the day. There is a lower level that is the main club at big parties and a more comfortable lounge upstairs.

This longstanding bar was legendary during the 1980s and 90s. It serves breakfast with many vegetarian options, as well as special beer from Vorarlberg.

This café serves a lunch menu and international food choices including lots of vegetarian options. It has a nice laid back atmosphere, and is one of Vienna's rare non-smoking cafés. It has good Austrian whine and red wine choices.

The place on the Yppenmarkt has specific vegetarian foods and attracts a mixed public. The café has existed since 1895.

Inside the Gloriette with good view over to the Schönbrunn palace serves early breakfast, café and cakes. One has to climb up the hill of the Schönbrunn park to reach it.

Small coffee place nicely lost in the middle of Mariahilf. In winter the rustic and warm oven is wonderful. In summer one can sit outdoors.

This Middle Eastern cafe is modeled after old coffee houses in Cairo and Alexandria, and serves many organic foods. Takeaway is available, although the atmosphere really invites one to linger.

Cafe Schwarzenberg

Beautiful traditional Viennese café with view on the Schwarzenbergplatz and the Ring avenue. It has fine pastries and coffee choices.

Cute little coffee place sells mostly organic products. Serves breakfast, gallettes, and crêpes.

This place is packed for football games and serves mostly beer and wine. The Schnitzel is highly recommended by locals.

Thomas Bernhard used to come here daily as do many other Viennese literate. It exists since more than 35 years. Happily expect Viennese grumpy senior waiters.

Café Central

One of the most famous Vienna coffee houses, which opened in 1876, has been authentically restored. Beautiful premises inside the Palais Ferstel, it is too touristy and a bit more expensive for having a meal, but can be worth it for a cup of coffee. There is an occasional pianist that is delightful to hear.

Famous traditional coffeehouse, and equally good place for having a meal. They opened a second branch on Fleischmarkt.

Café Drechsler

The café is open during nights. It opened in 1919 by Engelbert Drechsler and is a traditional and popular all-night meeting point. It was carefully remodeled in 2007.

This café has been operating since 1840, when the building was completed. The interior dates from the last redesign in 1933.

A very popular café that has been redecorated. It serves good food with many vegetarian options for fair prices and typical Austrian desserts like "Topfen-knöderl" or "Powiderl-Tascherl". Free Wi-Fi. Most of the places are non-smoking.

A very traditional Viennese café, hence visitors take their time to enjoy the lovely cakes.

Café Hawelka

One of the most famous intellectual cafes in Vienna. Established in 1939. Surprisingly cheap for its location and its fame and can get quite cozy. Josephine Hawelka (former owner, deceased 2005) was proud of the marriages she caused by placing random people together at tables. Try the Buchteln.

Old café, cozy and romantic. Used to be frequented by Sigmund Freud. Delicious food and desserts.
