48er-Basar

A shop run by the City's Waste Disposal (Department no. 48, hence the name) which sells stuff thrown to trash, which is still useful and refurbished. Additionally, phased out equipment of the City (school and office furniture, projectors and so on) can be found here. A bargain hunter's and treasure seeker's paradise.

A. E. Köchert

Jakob Heinrich Köchert founded the jewellery in 1814 in collaboration with the artistic French goldsmith Emanuel Pioté. The high end jewellery is dedicated to the fine art of goldsmithing and gemstone.

Akademietheater

The Akademietheater is the smaller of two performance halls of the Burgtheater ensemble. It was built between 1911 and 1913 by the architects Fellner und Hellmer and Ludwig Baumann.

Part of a local chain. Informal and popular place serving generic but reasonably priced Japanese and Korean dishes. The menu has a vegetarian section. Quick service by efficient waiters.

Albertina

Once a palace, it is now the most popular exhibition space in Vienna, mainly for traditional modern art. The building itself is an experience as well. It is home to a valuable drawing collection, including many works of the German Renaissance painter, Dürer.

Alt Wien

This cafe/restaurant/bar is on a very medieval-looking lane in the central district and is a time warp of another kind: its folky-bohemian atmosphere could convince you that you're in North Beach or Greenwich Village, circa 1967. Liveliest late.

The chocolate confectioner sells for more than 100 years exquisite hand made miniature chocolate. Their boxes are beautifully designed.

Am Graben

An up-scale shopping promenade, with many local specialties such as Wien Porzellan. A notable landmark is the Plague Column (Pestsäule), a memorial erected in 1693 commemorating one of the last major plague epidemics which swept through Vienna in 1679.

Amalienbad

The big swimming pool was built between 1923 and 1926 with an interior decoration in Art-Déco style. Expect the pool to be crowded (depending on time) and hence it may be hard to swim in straight lines. In the sauna areas (for additional price), there are cold and warm pools and a hot tub in addition to a steam room, a bio sauna and two Finnish saunas (with a schedule of Austrian aufguss sessions).

Amerlingbeisl

The restaurant has a good selection of food with vegetarian options too. Inside smoking is permitted, but this is not so much of a problem for non-smokers in summer when it's possible to sit outside. The bar serves beer, some wines, and standard cocktails.

The restaurant serves seasonal Viennese food typically of course plates with large quantities. The cellar is a vinothek with a good selection of Austrian wines.

Ankeruhr

A large 4-m-diameter musical clock on a pedestrian bridge connecting two neighboring buildings. The clock was designed between 1911 and 1914 by the Judgenstil painter Franz Matsch, and features prominent figures from Viennese history, each with a Roman character. At noon all figures parade across the clock face, accompanied by music. During the Advent season, Christmas songs are played daily at 17:00 and 18:00.

A Cineplexx theater with plenty of choices including original versions. The cinema opened here in 1905. According to seat numbers it is one of the biggest in Vienna.

Arena

Arena Wien

The arena is one of the biggest concert and alternative culture places. The slaughterhouse got squatted in 1976 and operates since as culture center. FM4 hosts here its annual birthday party. The programme lists the performing artists. The open air arena can host 3000 peoples.

Arnold Schönberg Center

This building houses an archive of the works of the Viennese composer, with a permanent exhibit relating to his work and music and a gallery of his paintings.

Aromat

This place has an excellent different dinner menu with vegetarian option every week. It has the best crêpes in Vienna, but is unfortunately a smokers restaurant. Reservations are strongly recommended.

The finest porcelain in Europe. You can also visit their factory at the main entry to the Augarten. They are preparing a limited street-art themed line as an artistic project that is Viennese.

Michaelerplatz Excavations

Archeological excavations carried out between 1989 and 1991 revealed not only the foundations of medieval buildings but also remains of the Roman canabae (civilian support settlement) of Vindobona, as Vienna was then known. The viewing area was designed by Viennese architect Hans Hollein.
