Asbóth House

Asbóth-ház

Baroque style building. It was built by the Festetics Manor as an officer's residence in the second half of the 18th century. Sándor Asbóth, a military officer of the War of Independence of 1848-1849 was born here.

Balaton Museum

Balatoni Múzeum

A Neo-Baroque building. There are permanent exhibitions telling the visitors about the development of the Balaton, its flora and fauna and the historical relics of its surroundings. Also here you can find the Roman and Medieval Lapidary and the memorial room of the famous painter, János Halápy.

The folk costums and clothes of burghers and craftsmen of the historical Hungary are presented by about half thousand dolls.

Festetics Palace – Aristocratic Lifestyle Exhibition and Helikon Library

The 18 original or reconstructed rooms of the exhibition show the aristocratic lifestyle of the 18th and 19th centuries. The most valuable part of the palace is Hungary’s sole intact aristocratic private library.

Georgikon Croft History Exhibition Site

A former farmstead, which used to serve educational purposes now is a museum building. There are exhibitions about the history of higher agricultural education in Hungary, about corn production, viniculture. There is also a carriage exhibition with a wheelwright and a blacksmith workshop. The steam-plough is an imposing sight especially if you consider that it is still in working order.

Helikon Park

This is the biggest green area of the town. Here you can see the Helikon Monument, a landmark of the town, which was erected to commemorate the Helikon Festivals held 1817–1819.

Here you can see native cattle breeds, sheep breeds, horse breeds, pig breeds, bred Hungarian goats, Hungarian donkeys, Hungarian hens, turkeys, waterfowl, Hungarian ruffled goose, guinea fowl, dog breeds. Among the domestic game species, for example, red deer, deer, fallow deer, wild boar, pheasant and partridge can be found.

Market of Keszthely

To the west of the central square is the marketplace. On Saturdays and Wednesdays the square and some surrounding streets fill with market vendor stalls selling a wide variety of wares. Flowers, fruit, vegetables, and of course paprika are available in abundance together with tools, clothes and other paraphernalia. In the spring Cherries and Walnuts are a great buy.

Our Lady of Hungary Roman Catholic Parish Church

It was built on the site of a former 12–13th century church by palatine Stephen Lackfi. Renovations at the end of the 19th century gave the church its Neo-Gothic tower and rose windows. In 1974 a number of sensational 15th-century frescoes were discovered in the sacristy.

The garden, which used to measure 42 hectares, is now a nature reserve. There is a French garden and an English garden where we can find numerous tree rarities. Old and exotic trees and hundreds of years old, colourful flowerbeds, fountains, statues are there – among them the full-figure bronze Statue of George Festetics, the garden pond and the fountain decorated with stone lions. Pethő House

Pethő-ház

Baroque style building. It was a property of the Festetics family estate. Former grain traders lived here. A granary building is located in its courtyard. Károly Goldmark, the famous composer was born here in 1830.

Radio and Television Collection

Located in a former Baroque granary. Local entrepreneur József Nádler established the exhibition in 2006. The collection has almost 1,000 pieces, including unique rarities.

Saint Nicholas Cemetery

Here is the Festetics Mausoleum and the Cemetery Chapel. The neoclassical Mausoleum was built by Count Festetics Tasziló in 1925 for his wife, Princess Mary Hamilton. This mimics a classical temple architecture. It is a stepped substructure. Reinforced concrete structure with a tympanum and gabled roof. There are, – on side of longitudinal side walls – three-three semicircular arcades and Doric pilasters.

Surber's Exhibition of Automatic Musical Instruments and Phonographs

Exhibition of automatic musical instruments from the time, when there were no radios and record players to the 50's of the last century.

Synagogue

Zsinagóga

Built in 1852 in the neo-classical style. The shape was altered in 1894 when the building was remodeled in the spirit of eclecticism. In 1898 an organ built by Sándor Országh was installed. The temple served the local Neolog congregation. The building was erected according to tradition on a lower level as compared to its surroundings. Its East-West length, breadth and height are almost equal. The inside is surrounded on 3 sides by a gallery for women supported by iron columns. The original neo-classical architecture is preserved on the east side of the synagogue.

The island-bath keeps the silhouettes of the original building. The pier, which protrudes deep into the lake provides a harbour for the boats cruising the lake on schedule and a favourite fishing place at the same time.

It was built in 1769 as a county lodging by Kristof Hofstädter. Later, it was rebuilt in Zopf style.
