Ocean Terminal

A huge undercover shopping centre with the usual High Street chain shops and a Vue cinema plus bars and food outlets. It was built on former shipyards and intended as a terminal for cruise passengers, but by 2001 when it opened cruisers had grown to humongous size too big for the harbour approaches and wharves. Britannia was then permanently moored alongside, so even smaller vessels can no longer dock here.

Indoor shopping centre with Marks and Spencer, Morrisons and some 50 other shops.

Hing Sing

Chinese supermarket with food items from across south-east Asia, plus crockery and cooking utensils. Great for those hard-to-find ingredients but even items stocked by mainstream supermarkets are often better value here.

St James Quarter

Shopping centre which opened in 2021, replacing the tired St James Centre, includes John Lewis department store, and 3 floors of mid- and up-market chain stores. Also here are the W Hotel, Roomzzz aparthotel and several restaurants. Too bad about the curling tapered roof sculpture, which looks like a... well, enough to spoil the view.
