Hundertwasser’s Anti-Geometry Walk

Escape the straight line. Start with coffee at the source of Vienna’s most colorful architecture, then wander south to see the famous residential building that inspired it.

Best time: noneAbout 75 min

Timeline

  1. 10:00

    KunstHausWien

Step inside KunstHausWien. Hundertwasser’s design is a deliberate assault on the ruler and T-square. The vibrant, asymmetrical interiors are best appreciated in the quiet morning light before the midday crowds arrive. Check the ticket price before you go: €10 for adults.

  2. 10:45

    Cafe Menta

Walk four minutes south to Cafe Menta. Designed with an industrial bar and cool look, it is the perfect spot for a caffeine recharge and vegetarian snacks. It opens early at 08:30, so it will be ready for you.

  3. 11:05

    Hundertwasserhaus

Continue the short seven-minute walk south to the Hundertwasserhaus. This is the actual apartment complex that put the architect on the map. Look up at the undulating roofs, the protruding windows, and the trees growing from the balconies. Remember that this is still a private residence. Respect the residents' privacy and do not block the pathways.

Local tip

The tram stops at Radetzkyplatz for easy access to the starting point. Keep an eye on the opening hours for KunstHausWien (10:00-19:00) to ensure you have enough time to explore the gallery before it closes.
