Ubud

Ubud, a town in central Bali of around 75,000 people (2020), is regarded as the cultural centre of Bali. It is famous as an arts and crafts hub, and much of the town and nearby villages seems to consist of artists' workshops and galleries. There are some remarkable architectural and cultural sights to be found, and a general feeling of well being to be enjoyed, thanks to the town's spirit and surroundings. At first glance, the horrible traffic, over-development, loud nightclubs and taco Tuesdays might hide all this, but the art, nature and beauty are still there. You just have to get off the main roads to find them.

  6. DoHiking trail

    Campuhan Ridge Walk

Campuhan Ridge Walk begins beside the Pura Gunung Lebah and follows a gently undulating 2 km paved ridge trail. This walk was recommended in the early 21st century but as of 2026 the views have sadly been ruined by development. Still, it is a nice enough walk. The best way to do it is to take a Grab to Bankiang Sidem, the village on the northern end of the walk. This way, you'll be walking downhill 2km back into central Ubud. Note: a taxi mafia controls Bankiang Sidem and prevents Grabs and outside taxis from picking up passengers there. They can still drop off, however.
