Sunset over Santiago's Hill

A short climb for the city’s best evening light, followed by a classic Chilean dinner.

Best time: 20:55About 120 min

Timeline

  1. 20:10

    Ciudad Vieja

Grab a gourmet sandwich at Ciudad Vieja. It’s a popular 'sanguchería' near the zoo, so go early to avoid the evening rush. The prices are economical, making it a perfect fuel for the walk up.

  2. 20:35

    Parque Metropolitano de Santiago

Walk from the food shop to the entrance of Parque Metropolitano de Santiago. Use the route from Pedro de Valdivia metro station: go east on calle Pedro de Valdivia, then north to the end of the street. This path leads directly up the hill toward the viewing area.

  3. 20:55

    Parque Bustamante

Find your spot in Parque Bustamante. This park is situated on the southern slope of the hill, facing west. As the sun sets toward the WSW, the golden light will wash over the skyline and the Mapocho Valley. The walk from the main park entrance is about 51 minutes, so you will have ample time to settle in and watch the sky change from blue to orange.

  4. 21:40

    Galindo

Head down to Bellavista for dinner at Galindo. It is one of the few places open late enough for a post-sunset meal. Order typical Chilean dishes like pastel de choclo or arrollado huaso. The atmosphere is lively, fitting the transition from the quiet hilltop to the city's nightlife district.

Local tip

The walk from the metro station up to the viewing area is steep. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket, as it gets cooler at the top after the sun goes down.
