1. EatInner North

   Arakataka

   The most upmarket offering in Oslo's Bermuda Triangle of cheap eating, Arakataka manages to pull off decent Nordic, French and Mediterranean cuisine at decent prices. Small dishes; it takes three dishes or more to get saturated.

   Beach Club

   Classical diner, opened 1989. Best burgers in town? Relaxed atmosphere, pleasant staff. Busy during summer. Hip, timeless and family friendly, all at the same time.

   Bislett Kebab

   Voted Oslo's best for kebabs many times, not the cheapest place, but good value for money. However if you want authentic kebabs try Torggata or the beginning of Trondheimsveien.

   Bølgen & Moi

   Modern restaurant in the Frogner district. There's another Bølgen & Moi on Tjuvholmen island at the waterfront.

   Vietnamese. Simple interior but very popular among people who appreciate authentic Vietnamese food. Dishes and beverages at affordable prices.

   Looks scruffy from the outside, but don't let that fool you. A fantastic Indian restaurant with all the trimmings.

   One of the finest Chinese restaurants in Europe. All the expensive dishes are worth it. Try their Peking Duck, which must be pre-ordered the day before, but is a true feast.

    Inside the Design and Architecture centre, Elvebredden has some fantastic lunch offerings and stunning, but fairly upmarket, main dishes in the evening.

    -is a dragestil complex consisting of patisserie Seterstua and restaurant Finstua as well as banqueting facilities. Wonderful views over the entire city. The food is based on Norwegian cuisine traditions, but is expensive.

    Gamle Raadhus Restaurant is located in historical surroundings: Oslo's original city hall from 1641. Serves unique traditional Norwegian food, which it has since 1856. The food (lunch and dinner) is made from scratch, with the use of local Norwegian products. Expensive.

    The first of the Vietnamese bargain offerings are still going strong. Although the food in Vietnam is known to be tastier, you'll need a plane ticket to Hanoi to get it this cheap! (at least it feels like that when you're used to Norwegian food prices).

    Lorry is an institution in Parkveien, near the Palace and at the lower end of Hegdehaugsveien/Bogstadveien shopping street. It is a quirky mix of proper restaurant and bar. Originally a "brown" tavern that has been in operation since 1901. The menu includes hearty food, particularly before Christmas when traditional Norwegian Christmas food is served. Beer on tap and a wide selection of beer in bottles. Lorry is a place for anybody: Cabinet ministers, journalists and media celebrities, university professors and artists mingle with the local beer guzzlers and friends for Friday beer. Outdoor seating in the pedestrian street.

    traditional restaurant with a restaurant menu based on the traditional Norwegian cuisine. Widely used as a meeting place and a drinking den.

    This New Nordic Cuisine restaurant serving organic, local food jumped straight to two stars in Michelin's Guide Rouge at the earliest opportunity after opening, the first Nordic restaurant to do so. They have now advanced to three stars. World class restaurant.

    Generally accepted as the best kebab in the area, but steadily contested by Mediterran and Lille Amir.

    Japanese/Asian. Probably the best budget sushi in town, as well as baguettes (from NOK30) and a few hot dishes. Not the most cosy place to eat, but a great place for a cheap lunch or dinner.

    Cal-mex joint offering huge meals, but reports say quality has faded. A new branch near the crossing of Hegdehaugsveien/Sporveisgata in Homansbyen (tram 11-19 to Rosenborg) does little to redeem this.

    It has some excellent Turkish dishes. Burgers, pizza and breakfast are also available from 49 kr and upwards. A cosy place with occasional unexpected classical music played early in the day.

    All-Asian gourmet offering south of downtown, at the waterfront. The best East-Asian restaurant in Northern Europe (competing it out with dinner), with prices to match. There are two restaurants: Barcode, and Sky. Sky is on the thirteenth floor, and is more of a bar/lounge; while Barcode is the main restaurant.

    Enjoy this unique design experience. This was the Oslo airport in the 1950s and is now a café with a great lunch menu and various cakes and treats.

    One of the best known and largest places in east Oslo. Restaurant, beer Hall, nightclub and roof terrace. With classic Norwegian food.

    Palace Grill

    Highly recommended gourmet restaurant where the menu changes daily according to the chef's mood and available ingredients. A ten-course meal costs about 850 kr per person. Only 23 seats and no reservations, but a good bar to while away the hours waiting for food.

    The best baguettes downtown. Delivers lashings of filling on their almighty subs. Also chicken breast, fish and beef burgers.
