Markets and independent shops in Los Angeles

  1. BuyHollywood

    Ovation Hollywood

Something of an attraction in its own right, this massive shopping complex is the home of the Dolby Theatre (where the Oscars are held) and adjacent to Grauman's Chinese Theatre. The streetfront facing Hollywood Blvd is lined with giant advertisements and LED signs, making it seem like a miniature Times Square. Its four levels hold a food court and numerous retail chains, and since its construction it has become the location of most tourist-oriented services in Hollywood, like bus tours and information centers.

In a downtown LA loft totaling, it has over 250,000 used and new books and 10,000 records for sale on 2 floors with a yarn gallery, arts and rare book annex and a small art gallery. Events like book reviews, book signings and open mic nights are held here as well.

  4. BuyDowntown

    Fashion District

The area is largely a manufacturing and wholesale showroom center, with hundreds of retail shops carry cheaply made and priced goods catering to budget shoppers and the large Latin-American community that work in the area. It's being injected with a dose of young trendy brands like Acne, Oak, and Aesop, mostly centered around 9th & Broadway, but still a good spot to stock up on cheap basics like socks and t-shirts, or, for the DIY crowd, hit one of the numerous huge fabric stores that stock just about every type of fabric, lace, and general bric-a-brac imaginable.

  5. BuyRecord shopHollywood

    Amoeba Music

The country's largest independent music store, Amoeba has three locations including Hollywood, Berkeley and San Francisco. Prices are slightly higher than at the discount stores, but the selection is enormous and just about any obscure record you could imagine is to be found somewhere on the shelves.

  6. BuyFarmers marketWilshire

    Farmers Market

A historic market complex dating from the 1930s with lots of produce stands, shops and gourmet restaurants, and today it remains a popular spot for locals to pick up fresh produce. A tourist trolley offers free rides between the Farmers Market and The Grove.

  7. BuyDowntown

    Jewelry District

Wonder where all of those West Coast Rappers get their bling bling? Well, if they are frugal, they get it in the Jewelry District. Bounded by Olive-Broadway and 6th-7th, it is conveniently close to Pershing Square (parking and Red line access).

  8. BuyDowntown

    Flower District

The cheapest place to buy flowers in the city, it's where most of the florists get their supply. Come very early for the best selection. Two huge warehouses spread across both sides of Wall Street (the Original Los Angeles Flower Market and the Southern California Flower Market).

    $1 admission Sa, $2 admission M-F

  9. BuyFlea marketDowntown

    Santee Alley

    Fashion District

A bustling outdoor flea market crammed in an alley, home of knock off designer labels and impossibly crappy jewelry. Come here for interesting atmosphere, or to buy cheap socks.

  10. BuyDeliWilshire

    Monsieur Marcel

If you enjoy cheese and wine, then you'll love shopping here! Monsieur Marcel is a delightful French deli in the Farmers Markets on 3rd Avenue where you can stock up on a range of gourmet produce, but most importantly there's over 500 vintage of wine on offer with a range of experienced staff to help you make your decisions.

  11. BuyHollywood

    Frederick's of Hollywood

During the golden years of Hollywood, all the superstars were wearing Fredericks, from Greta Garbo to Mae West to Marilyn Monroe. Today, the store is a lot less polished but still a good place to pick up glamorous lingerie.

  12. BuyWest

    Nijiya Market

A Japanese market located in the 'Little Osaka' neighborhood. Can be a slightly pricier option, but the selection and variety are good. Their produce department is a good place to start when looking for harder-to-find fruits and ingredients.

  13. BuyWilshire

    The Grove

An outdoor shopping and entertainment complex that will appeal to tourists that want to shop, with most of the fashion chains you can expect to find at any upscale mall, as well as some restaurants and a movie theater. At the center of the complex is a dancing fountain, and a tourist trolley offers free rides between The Grove and the adjacent Farmers Market.
