   Cafeteria-style vegan restaurant, large portions, relatively cheap. Tofu goulash recommended. Staff are very helpful at explaining the dishes so ask what they are if you don't know. Cash only. There is an ATM at the bank across the street.

   Possibly the one place worth going to on Váci utca. Popular with tourists and locals alike, although advanced travellers report it's too touristy. Located in an atmospheric cellar, the foreboding name means "wooden platter" in Hungarian, and refers to the plates that the ridiculously huge portions are served on — an order of goose with dumplings, for example, will lead to an entire goose being deposited on your plate. Takeaway bags are provided on request if you can't finish it all. In solidly meat-eating Hungary, this is also one of the few places where you can sample vegetarian versions of dishes like goulash. Reservations are essential for lunch- or dinner-time visits.

   Macska which means "Cat" in Hungarian is a charming, eclectic pub and vegetarian restaurant in District VIII. The neighborhood may have a bit of a bad reputation, but really it's quite alright as it is close to Jozsef Ringroad. It is a ruin pub decorated with recycled, retro pieces, showing yet again that in Hungary one man’s trash truly is another man’s treasure. Feature art exhibitions, DJ sets and craft beer as well as delicious vegetarian snacks, meal and desserts. Wifi, friendly staff and interesting patrons.
