1. EatKhao San Road

   Aquatini Bar & Restaurant

   Part of the Navalai River Resort, this luxury restaurant with Thai and Western dishes has river views over the Chao Phraya River. The interior of the indoor bar has random postmodern touches. It's best to stick to outdoors though, as the deck gives the best views. The breeze, trees and light music make the ambience chilled out. Mostly foreigners visit this place, and the staff make it feel a bit like being inside a resort (well, which you are). The kitchen sure knows how to keep their dishes true to the Thai tongue, though. Try the tom kha kai — it's whiter than white.

2. EatSilom

   The entrance lined with thousands of fairy lights sets a nice atmosphere for what is inside. There is an excellent menu of traditional Thai food that is either served inside or out in a small garden courtyard. They also have an excellent wine cellar.

   Popular for wonton noodles and wonton soup. The whole place is air-conditioned, which is a relief after long shopping days in the Pratunam Market. Try the braised pork trotters.

   This place serves some surprisingly authentic Cajun food. Premium prices are charged for dinner but the two or three-course lunches at 230-290 baht are a good value. On Tuesday evenings they have a Mexican buffet starting at 18:00 which is somewhat cheaper than regular prices. The original location at Washington Square off Sukhumvit Soi 22 has closed.

5. EatSukhumvit

   Cabbages and Condoms

   Run by Thailand's Population and Community Development Association, the odd name refers to the fact that the NGO promotes agricultural production as well as condom use; and no prizes for guessing what you'll get after dinner instead of an after-dinner mint. The food is competent but toned down for the foreign palate. A bit expensive for what you get but it's for an excellent cause.

   This restaurant is part of an international Hasidic chain with more than 2,000 branches all over the world. It is ideal for Jewish travellers that keep kosher. There is a large meat menu with the opportunity to taste some great kosher Thai cuisine. Or get a schnitzel with hummus. Finally something different than the usual pad thai that's on every street corner! They also have a synagogue (services daily at 10:00) and a small store, where you can purchase packet soups, matza, and other kosher items.

   This is one of the more upmarket restaurants in the area. Beforehand you can choose one of the usual Chinese appetizers such as dim sum, spring rolls, or prawn crackers. The menus are in English and have pictures so you can just point to your desired dish.

    Many of the eateries here specialise in one dish, and here pork satay with sweet toast is the only dish served. Forget the passable satay usually served from street carts, Chong Kee knows how to make this. The skewers here are smoky and tender, and fat cuts of pork are used. Lots of herbs and the right amount of chilis are used in the peanut sauce making it sweet as it's supposed to be. Try to avoid peak hours as those can be crowded.

15. EatSiam Square

    Gaggan

    Opened in 2010 by Gaggan Anand, an Indian chef who wanted to refine Indian dining to the level of French cuisine. And he has succeeded. Gaggan was ranked as the best restaurant in Asia in 2015, 2016 and 2017 by Restaurant magazine. In 2017, it was even ranked as 7th in the entire world. Anand and his restaurant were featured in season 2 of the Netflix documentary series Chef's Table. A session in Gaggan takes three hours with 25 servings. The menu only gives pointers and icons to the servings, thus once served, you'll be surprised by the unique mix of tastes and shapes. Make a reservation at least one month in advance. If you want seats with a view of the kitchen, at least three months in advance.

    Formerly Kai Ton Pratunam, it initially seems like a simple street food vendor—but it is always crowded as the guests rave about the food. It is touted as having Bangkok's best chicken rice (ข้าวมันไก่ khao man kai), which is quite similar to Hainanese chicken rice. The staff does not speak English and there is no English sign up, but the employees are easy to recognise as they wear pink clothing, a white cap and a chicken logo on the back.

    This chain restaurant started out as a small noodles stall in Trok Issaranuphap near Yaowarat Road. Its original location had built up a good reputation, but has since closed. New branches have spread all over Bangkok and it turned lot more upmarket. Its interior looks like an old Chinese tea shop. Their Hong Kong-style noodles with shrimp soup is well regarded.

    The typical messy place you would expect around Yaowarat with fresh crabs and king prawns hanging out front. Inside it is a plain long hall and it is usually packed. Order the Chinese dishes, particularly the crab is worth it. Stir-fried crab with yellow curry powder is around 1,000 baht, but you can also go for cheaper dishes like braised goosefeet or roasted duck. There's also ample choice of dim sum that will be served on multiple small plates.

    Tucked in a small alley, this restaurant is the only good restaurant close to the Grand Palace. Its odd location makes it often unnoticed by foreigner travellers, which is a shame as it has a great view over the Chao Phraya River. It's best to sit outside on the terrace, but you can also sit indoors if you want to cool down from the heat. On the menu is seafood, and some of the best the city has to offer. But beware: it's very spicy.

    One of the famous places to get kuay jab (ก๋วยจั๊บน้ำใส), a roll-like rice noodle with crispy pork belly, blood and intestines served in clear soup. Sounds delicious, doesn't it? It looks just like any other simple budget eatery, but insiders hail the freshness of the ingredients here. The locals flock to this place, so if you're coming in the early evening, you may have to wait in line.

    Established 1984, this is the oldest genuine Italian restaurant in Bangkok, and most likely also in Thailand. Though long established as the Italian place to eat amongst the Thai stars, politicians and local business elite, the atmosphere is relaxed and caters to tourists and middle class as well. The food prepared by the Italian chef is top class and they stock a wine selection to match. It is expensive by any means, 1,500 baht is a normal price for a bottle of wine.

Don't expect any English to be spoken here as it is only frequented by the locals. But ordering is relatively straightforward, just point to the toppings you want to have.

    Mr. Yim had to move out of his building and now sells his food as a (permanent) street vendor at the same corner, using the temple wall as the back wall of his place. Food is still a great value, with a wide selection of quality products, including veggie options. The big baguettes, and the breakfast, are well worth it.

    Excellent Thai barbecue hot pot. Extremely popular among locals, so you can expect a long wait (up to an hour), particularly on weekends, if you just show up. Your best bet is to make a reservation, which, assuming your Thai is subpar for a phone call, would involve walking up to the restaurant and making one in person. No alcohol served, but you're welcome to bring your own from the 7-Eleven around the corner.

    Nai Sow

    A Thai-Chinese restaurant that has been consistently excellent for the last 40 years. It used to be run by Mr. Sow at Sampheng Lane, but moved to its current location at Phlap Phla Chai intersection as his son took over business. Foreigners praise the tom yam kung, but the locals come here for pan-fried hoi tod (fried mussels with eggs). You can also try the muu sa-ded, pork rubbed with garlic. The owner does not boil the pork as other restaurants do, but grills it on a hot cooker until it is black. This place is so popular that it can be difficult to find a seat in the evening.

    This simple restaurant is specialised in yen ta fo, a Chinese seafood dish that is also known as rice noodles in red tofu soup. It includes delicacies such as coagulated blood, pickled squid and fishballs. It has a distinctive pink colour because of the fermented soybean paste that is added to the meal. This place is locally well known, so prices are a little higher than similar noodle restaurants.

    Far from the tourist's eye is the Nang Loeng Market, a market that has been going since 1899 until a fire destroyed it about ten years ago. It has been rebuilt since, and is a great visit for trying some Thai sweets. There is ample supply of sticky rice snacks or khanom bueang at the carts, or have some egg noodles at the surrounding noodle shops.

    A typical Khao San Road restaurant that is actually on Soi Rambuttri. It's a street restaurant with red plastic chairs and cheap yellow tables. Mostly known by backpackers for delicious seafood; their grilled fish is a good option. It is also a great place to meet other backpackers while enjoying a cheap beer (only 50 baht for a large one). As a result, it can be crowded on evenings.
