DrinkGay barGreenwich VillageManhattanStonewall Inn
A veritable icon of the worldwide gay community, not just New York's. While it's not the original incarnation of the bar that was the site of the Stonewall riots of 1969 (the building has gone through several uses since then), the current incarnation pays homage to the old and has regained its prominence as a meeting place in the LGBT community. You must be 21 and a proper ID is required. 2-drink minimum.

DrinkCaféSan MarcoVeniceCaffè Florian
On the extravagant side there is Caffè Florian, on Piazza San Marco. It claims to be the oldest coffee house still in operation, established in 1720. The interior is about a century newer, and brings an exclusive setting for a cup of coffee, even if sitting outside overlooking the entire piazza and its surroundings may be a better choice on a nice summer day. The café has its own outdoor orchestra playing an assortment of Italian music. Just sitting down at the table costs €6 per seat (for the orchestra it says on the menu) and the rest on the menu is at least twice the price you would have paid at home. Light lunch or dinner 12:00-15:00, 19:30-22:00, afternoon tea 15:09-18:00, great choice of semifreddo (parfaits) (€14), lemon ice cream with soda (€15), great choice of tea and coffee specialities; espresso €6.50. music charge €6.

DrinkCaféInnere StadtViennaDemel
K. u. K. Hofzuckerbäcker
Café and confectionary shop. Good pastries are ubiquitous in Vienna, but Demel is considered by many to have the best of all and indeed was once the pastry caterer to the Imperial household. As a result of this it is usually jammed with tourists, though their amusing marzipan display window can be admired even from the street. Outdoor seating in warm weather, but the inside is more atmospheric.

DrinkCaféCentroBuenos AiresCafe Tortoni
Opened in 1858, one of the most traditional coffee houses in Buenos Aires. It has been restored to its original style, which dates back to 150 years ago. It was a cultural meeting point of many famous people, like Borges, Quinquela Martin, Molina Campos, among others. The hot chocolate is incredible. This cafe suffers from its popularity - people queue on the footpath and are called in two by two as in the ark to have a cup of tea or even a coca cola and leave again.

DrinkCaféInnere StadtViennaCafé Hawelka
One of the most famous intellectual cafes in Vienna. Established in 1939. Surprisingly cheap for its location and its fame and can get quite cozy. Josephine Hawelka (former owner, deceased 2005) was proud of the marriages she caused by placing random people together at tables. Try the Buchteln.

DrinkLeipzigAuerbachs Keller
This pub has been around since medieval times. Opened in 1525, it is among the oldest continuously operated pubs in Germany. The barrel cellar (only opened for private parties) has been the background to a scene in one of Germany's most famous plays, "Faust" by Goethe. The master of German literature himself used to drink his wine here, and the rooms are frequently the set for a live, around-the-city re-enactment of the play.

DrinkCaféInnere StadtViennaCafé Central
One of the most famous Vienna coffee houses, which opened in 1876, has been authentically restored. Beautiful premises inside the Palais Ferstel, it is too touristy and a bit more expensive for having a meal, but can be worth it for a cup of coffee. There is an occasional pianist that is delightful to hear.

DrinkCaféValenciaOrxata
horchata
A drink made from tigernut (Valencian: xufa, Spanish: chufa), which was first created during the Moorish period. Being cold and sweet, it is especially popular during the summer months, and can be ordered in orxateries or horchaterias and at street carts as well as in most cafés and bars. When ordering an orxata, you will most probably be asked whether you would like to have a fartón, a small pastry for being dipped in orxata, as well.

DrinkCaféBairro AltoLisbonCafé A Brasileira
One of Lisbon's remaining classic cafés, with a restaurant in the basement; despite renovation, not much has changed since the 1920s. The café was Fernando Pessoa's favourite place, and a statue of the poet/philosopher stands outside the main entrance on the terrace.

DrinkCanal DistrictAmsterdamParadiso
Sometimes referred to as a nightclub, it feels more like a nightly music venue and is the safest bet in town. Its interior is phenomenal as it is housed in a former church, but the main room has relatively bad acoustics. It gets a mixed crowd as there are plenty of rooms with different bands performing and it isn't too crazy expensive. Its music straddles the line between pop and alternative. Much of the performances are rock, but it can really be anything: don't be surprised to be dancing the Russian troika with thousands of people on a Wednesday night. It gets fairly packed, as is obvious by the huge line on the weekends, especially after 01:00.

DrinkPubPlantageAmsterdamBrouwerij 't IJ
Its label with an ostrich egg is a visual pun, as IJ and 'ei' - the word for egg - sound the same in Dutch. East of the centre, close to Artis Zoo, in a former bath house beside a windmill. A small-scale brewery where delicious beer in several varieties and strengths is brewed and sold - at a bar - on the premises. The beer is available at some specialist beer shops, and is of high quality and, in some cases, alcohol content. Internationally renowned!

DrinkBeer gardenMaxvorstadtMunichLöwenbräukeller
This brewery was founded in 1383, perhaps on Löwengrube near Frauenkirche - "Löwen" means lions. From 1826 to 1851 production migrated to its present site, with the Bräukeller across the street opened in 1883. The company grew by acquisition and has always exported strongly, with some brewing under license elsewhere, so it's the best-known German brand abroad. The traditional beer garden and beer hall seats 2000 and draws many foreign visitors. Brewery tours available, see "Do".
