Originally the formal side entrance for the Shogun’s visits to Zojo-ji, this gate was part of the 2nd Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada’s mausoleum. While the main buildings were destroyed in 1945, this gate survived and was relocated to its current position.

Built in 1717, this ornate vermilion gate is the last standing structure of the grand mausoleum dedicated to Tokugawa Ietsugu, the 7th Shogun. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property and is famous for the two Buddhist protector deities (Niten).
