Romanesque Church of Santa Maria de Cardet

Santa Maria de Cardet is the Romanesque parish church in the village of Cardet.Documented indirectly through 11th-12th century references to Vall de Boí settlements, the church likely postdates early village formation. Its Romanesque structure dates to the early 13th century, linked to Lavaix Monastery ownership. Reforms aligned with Vall de Boí's major consecrations (e.g., Taüll churches around 1123). Later additions include a sacristy, northern chapel, and 18th-century Baroque retable.This single-nave church with semicircular apse adapts to sloped terrain via a semi-basement level, forming a crypt under the presbytery with barrel vault and central window. Exterior features Lombard arcades, continuous lesenes, and saw-tooth friezes on the elevated apse. West facade has a porch-sheltered portal with incised chrismon and cross, plus a two-eyed bell gable. Interior shows heavy transformations: plastered nave, wooden choir loft, Baroque retable hiding apse details. Notable Romanesque remnants include a 13th-century painted altarpiece frontal (Maiestas Mariae with Nativity scenes) and beam at MNAC Barcelona. Medieval furnishings like baptismal font, ironwork, and 18th-19th century items (e.g., processional lantern) enrich the site.
