Sunnyside

Experience a guided tour of the home of Washington Irving, author of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip van Winkle. The site contains an "expansive landscape and gardens, with stunning Hudson River views" and "charming picnic spots". The grounds reflect Washington Irving's romantic view of art, nature, and history. He arranged garden paths, trees and shrubs, vistas, and water features to appear natural, and planted an exotic wisteria vine (still growing) to envelope the house. Irving's contemporaries extensively described and illustrated Sunnyside during his lifetime. Since Sunnyside and many of its furnishings remained in the family, so it is an authentic experience of mid-19th century life in America.

Hours: Admission by timed tours only. May 3-Nov 12, Wed-Sun. Also open Memorial Day, July 3 and 4, Labor Day, and Columbus Day. Weekdays: 10:30AM, 11, 11:30, 12:30PM, 1:30, 2, 2:30, 3, 3:30. Weekends and holidays: Every half hour. First tour 10am, last tour 3:30PM. Additional tour at 4PM, May 27 through September 4.. Allow approximately one hour to visit.

Lyndhurst

A Gothic-styled mansion, formerly home of railroad baron Jay Gould. Lyndhurst is now a property of the National Historic Trust. Lyndhurst is often decked out for holidays with themed events like a Victorian Halloween and Fairytale Christmas. The grounds are host to special events: antique, garden, craft (usually spring and fall), kennel club, and automobile shows. The Gothic exterior has been used in vampire movies like House of Dark Shadows, 1970. This National Historic Landmark has 67 acres of grounds and walking trails that are open to the public every day from dawn until dusk. House tours are available Spring through Fall.
