The Prison

La Presó

Open in 1863 as a prison, today is a contemporary art museum. It was built by the architect Elies Rogent in 1851.The structure of this building clearly follows the historicist criteria of the same architect, author of the neo-Romanesque building of the University of Barcelona (1863-70) and of the restoration of the Ripoll Monastery (1886-93). In the case of the Mataró Prison, Rogent follows the canons of medieval constructions of a civil nature, typical of the western Mediterranean, in the Late Middle Ages.The building ceased to function as a prison in 1967.
