Vječna vatra

Memorial site designed by architect Juraj Neidhardt, commemorating the victims of World War II with an eternal flame and inscription. The memorial was dedicated on 6 April 1946, the first anniversary of the liberation of Sarajevo from the four-year-long occupation by Nazi Germany and the fascist Independent State of Croatia.

Gradska Tržnica
Market hall opened in 1895 and home to local meat, cheese and vegetable merchants: walnuts are a speciality. The market was bombed with great loss of life in February 1994 and again in August 1995. The first attack was a single mortar, and responsibility was disputed. The second was five rounds undeniably from Bosnian-Serb positions, and precipitated NATO military intervention in the conflict.

Traditional Bosnian cuisine in a fabulous atmosphere, very very nice staff, almost like stepping back in time. If you're looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of the summer heat, this is it. The upstairs dining room has character and a great view down into the market. The owners are warm and friendly. The restaurant works even when the market doesn't.
