Modern, inventive Michelin-starred haute cuisine, served only as a degustation set menu: the 5-course "Confluence" (€99, lunch only) or the full 8-course "Prairial" (€135). Expect local, seasonal produce, heavy on vegetables and seafood and light on meat, with amazing sauces often made from fermented ingredients. Reservations essential. The spectacular building at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saone is built in a deconstructionist style and has expositions on science and mythology.

Brasserie Georges
An exceptional traditional brasserie, serving both traditional Lyonnaise food as well as Alsatian favorites like the Choucroute Impériale, a huge pile of sauerkraut with various sausages and an entire pork knuckle. The cavernous main dining hall is a real Art Deco treat. Founded in 1836, this is one of the largest brasseries in France and it can serve 1000 people a night over two sittings. Reservations accepted only for groups of 7 people or more, otherwise you'll have to queue: expect to spend up to an hour in line at peak times. Fortunately the second half of the queue is inside next to the bar, where you can sample the house brews while you wait.

St Irénée church
The oldest church in Lyon, and one of the oldest in France. The site is built on a Gallo-Roman necropolis which was in use for centuries, until the Middle Ages. Some sarcophagi from the 5th or 6th century are visible in the courtyard. The crypt dates back to the 9th century and was renovated in the 19th century. Early Christian remains (from the 4th-6th centuries) are kept inside. The church was rebuilt in the 19th century in a neo-classical style with a Byzantine influence. An arch from the 5th century remains. Behind the church, the calvary built in 1687 is also a great viewpoint.
