The Wilhelm-Marx-Haus was the first Hochhaus, or highrise building, in Germany and, apparently, in Europe. Finished in 1924, it is 57 m high and has 13 floors above ground level. The architect was Wilhelm Kreis. It used to be the home of the Düsseldorf Stock Exchange and includes a theatre. It is named after Wilhelm Marx, who was mayor of Düsseldorf in the early 20th century and started a programme for the modernisation of the city at that time.
