Teatro Colón

At the turn of the twentieth century Argentina was one of the world's richest countries and this theatre was built 1989 - 1908 when Argentina was at its apogee. The owners of the theatre set out to surpass the famed European theatres by erecting an astonishingly lavish building. The building covers a whole city block and the walls are lined with European marble or at least those sections of the walls not lined with gold leaf are. The project has been a resounding success. Modern experts declare the acoustics of the theatre to be the best in the world for opera and Argentinians are so fond of the theatre they queue around the block to renew annual subscriptions. In the early twenty-first century the theatre was completely renovated. Spanish and English tours run regularly and are very popular.
