Sydney Fish Markets

The Fish Market is both a trade market for retailers and a place for the general public to get their hands on the day's catch. The fish market has a number of vendors who will cook your fish for you, and a cooking school. Try the local Sydney rock or Pacific oysters. An early lunch at the fish markets is a local institution. Watch out for the swooping seagulls. A shiny new market is under construction right next door, and will replace the current rather grotty market sometime in 2025.

Sydney Fish Market
The largest seafood market in the Southern Hemisphere, which moved to shiny, modern digs in early 2026. The restaurants here are by and large tourist traps, but the fresh fish is excellent: grab a selection of sashimi or some of the precooked treats (prawns, crab, lobster) and a bottle of vino, then head across the road to Wentworth Park for a picnic. They also run a well-regarded cooking school. Sydneysiders stock up on seafood in the week before Christmas, and at Easter, making it exceptionally busy. Ample parking available.

Its newer competitor across the bay, the, caters more to high rollers, but both are open anybody who enrolls as a member (free). They also have the usual assortment of expensive boutiques and celebrity chef restaurants, as well as more utilitarian eateries that stay open late. Don't expect much in the way of views or local flavour: on the gambling floors, there are no windows and you might as well be in Vegas or Macau.

Simple, no fuss establishment, popular with the locals and hospitality workers in the area as well. Notable for operating round the clock every day; can get quite rowdy at night after other venues close and hardcore drinkers migrate here.
