In the words of Buffalo Rising's review of this place, "there was a time when Buffalo was loaded with lounges". Dark lighting, seating on sofas with plush upholstery, relaxing mood music, maybe some candles for ambience — remember that? Joey Dallos, Jr. sure does, and those who stop by his eponymous Hertel nightspot are in for a real throwback experience. You won't find any hoity-toity microbrews or craft cocktails, but you will find a bartending staff versed in the long-lost art of small talk. A limited food menu is also on offer.

Bella Mia may have closed in 2019, but Hertel wasn't without a resident confectioner for long: enter Blue Marble, where the inventory is not a Boomer-friendly lineup of retro-nostalgic candy brands but a millennial-oriented international smorgasbord of sweets with a focus on a different country every month (for instance, the inaugural one was Japan, with lychee milkshakes and wasabi Kit Kats in stock). If using your sweet tooth to promote intercultural awareness and harmony sounds like an idea you can get behind, stop on in — and if coffee is your indulgence of choice, do the same.

The Garage
The building that houses this restaurant used to be an auto body shop, and in many ways it still looks the part: from the retro-1950s decor, to the clear glass garage doors on the front of the building that lend the dining room a pleasant airiness, to the name of the place (of course), to the menu of sandwiches, panini, salads, and other breakfast and lunch fare with monikers that pay homage to American automotive greats. Fresh baked goods are another specialty: The Garage's cinnamon rolls are as delicious as they are huge. On the minus side, prices are a touch high, and they have a bad habit of running out of menu options (especially on the bakery end of the operation), so you might want to call ahead to see if your favorite item is in stock.
