Timeline

Grab a slice of homely English pie or a hot drink at The Refectory. It sits in the walled garden opposite the cathedral’s west front, so you can enjoy your snack while the afternoon sun still warms the stone.
15:42
Walk four minutes east to Abbey Gardens. Stroll through the formal gardens along the River Itchen. The greenery and water provide a peaceful buffer as you wait for the light to change.
16:12
Head back to the Cathedral. Find a spot near the west front or the nave to watch the sun dip toward the WSW. The golden light hitting the Norman stonery is the highlight of the day.
16:57
After the sun sets, walk nine minutes to The Black Boy. This traditional back-street boozer on Wharf Hill is a perfect place to settle in for a real ale and escape the chill of the evening.
Local tip
The Refectory is volunteer-run and offers great value. The Black Boy is a traditional pub, so expect a cozy, local atmosphere rather than a tourist trap.
