Timeline

  1. 09:30

    The Refectory

Eat a light lunch at The Refectory. This volunteer-run restaurant is located in the walled garden opposite the cathedral's west front, offering homely English dishes at reasonable prices. Arriving at opening helps you secure a seat before the midday rush.

  2. 10:15

    Abbey Gardens

Walk through Abbey Gardens. These formal gardens lie off the Broadway between King Alfred's statue and the rear of Winchester Cathedral. The Itchen flows through the grounds, and there is a children's play area if you wish to linger. The walk from The Refectory takes about seven minutes.

  3. 11:00

    The Black Boy

End your visit with a drink at The Black Boy. Tucked away on Wharf Hill off Chesil Street, this traditional back-street pub is faithful to its origins. It is a short six-minute walk from Abbey Gardens.
