Best time: 15 JanAbout 180 min

Timeline

  1. 16:07

    Lauberhorn

Take the cable car up to the Lauberhorn summit. The climb takes the edge off the day and gives you space to breathe before the crowd arrives. Dress warmly; the wind at 2,472 meters is sharp in January.

  2. 16:52

    Photopoint Männlichen Grindelwald - Wengen

Walk 38 minutes north to the Photopoint Männlichen Grindelwald - Wengen. This is the prime vantage point. Settle in early to find a clear spot facing west. The sun will sink toward the WSW, painting the peaks in blue and gold.

  3. 17:22

    Lauberhorn

Head back down to the village. The light fades quickly, so use the next hour to find a place to eat. Since there are no food shops listed in the immediate vicinity, check the route from the station to a restaurant in Wengen or Lauterbrunnen.

  4. 18:22

    Lauterbrunnen Valley

End the evening in the Lauterbrunnen Valley. It is a 50-minute walk west from the anchor, or a short train ride. The valley floor is sheltered and warm, offering a quiet place to finish your meal and a drink as the stars come out.

Local tip

The walk from the summit to the photopoint is exposed. Ensure your footwear is suitable for snow and ice in January. The return journey is best done by cable car to keep your energy up for dinner.
