Best time: 15 JanAbout 90 min

Timeline

  1. 15:42

    Koerners Pub

Start at Koerners Pub. Order a pint and settle in on the patio. It is a mellow spot with free pool and shuffleboard, perfect for burning off early energy before the main event.

  2. 16:57

    Nitobe Memorial Garden

Walk 8 minutes WSW to Nitobe Memorial Garden. This is one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in North America. Arrive with 45 minutes to spare to find a quiet bench or path.

  3. 17:42

    Nitobe Memorial Garden

Watch the sunset. The sun sets toward the WSW, aligning perfectly with the garden’s orientation. The golden light from 16:49 will have already bathed the traditional landscape in warm tones.

  4. 18:42

    Koerners Pub

Head back to Koerners Pub for a second wind. The pub stays open until 01:00, so you can stay as late as you like to discuss the view or play a few more games of foosball.

Local tip

The library's Automated Storage and Retrieval System is visible from the ground floor north windows if you want a quick geek thrill before or after, but it closes earlier than the pub. Check the route if you need to walk between the garden and the pub.

Check before you go

  • Koerners Pub is open Mo-Fr 11:30-01:00. On weekends it is closed, so this plan only works Monday through Friday.
  • The sunset alignment and timing are specific to the date chosen. Always verify the daily sunset time for your actual visit.
