Morning Light at the Serranos

Beat the heat and the crowds by starting early at Valencia’s most iconic gate, then enjoy a relaxed morning of local flavors nearby.

Best time: 09:30About 90 min

Timeline

  1. 09:30

    Torres de Serrano

Enter the Torres de Serrano at opening time. The gate was built in 1392 and served as a prison before its renovation. Arriving at 09:30 lets you climb the tower for excellent views before the midday rush. Check the route for access.

  2. 09:50

    Mercat Central

Walk 11 minutes to Mercat Central. This restored 1928 modernist iron and glass building is one of Europe’s largest markets. Wander through the stalls to see how locals shop for fresh produce, meat, seafood, and olives. The market closes at 15:00, so this is a perfect mid-morning stop.

  3. 10:20

    Paella

Head to Paella for lunch. This tasteful restaurant serves the classic rice dish in several versions. Try the paella valenciana with chicken and rabbit, the paella de marisco with seafood, or the paella mixta which combines both. It is a great way to experience the local cuisine after exploring the market.

Local tip

The Torres de Serrano is free on Sundays and holidays. If you visit on a weekday, the €2 adult fee applies. The Mercat Central is open Monday to Saturday until 15:00, so plan your visit before closing time.
