Timeline

  1. 14:51

    Ofvandahls Hovkonditori

Start with a traditional fika at Ofvandahls Hovkonditori. This historic café, open since 1878, is a favorite among students and locals. Order a coffee and a pastry to take with you. It is open on weekdays until 18:00 and weekends until 17:00, so you will have plenty of time before the sun goes down.

  2. 15:06

    Universitetsparken

Walk three minutes west from the café to Universitetsparken. This public park sits between the city center and the cathedral. It is a quiet spot to settle in and watch the light change. The park is open daily, and you will be positioned with the cathedral to your east.

  3. 15:21

    Universitetsparken

Watch the sunset. On 15 January, the sun sets at 15:21 toward the southwest. From Universitetsparken, the cathedral spires stand out against the fading light. The golden light begins around 13:48, building to the main sunset moment. Look up at the Gothic spires as the sky darkens.

  4. 15:36

    Uppsala Cathedral

Walk east from the park to Uppsala Cathedral. The cathedral is open from 08:00 to 18:00 daily. Even after sunset, you can step inside to see the vast interior, the burial site of Swedish royals, and the relics of Eric the Holy and Saint Bridget. The atmosphere inside is serene and reflective after the outdoor view.

Local tip

The walk from Universitetsparken to the cathedral is short and direct. If you prefer to stay outside after the sunset, the cathedral grounds offer a final view of the illuminated spires against the night sky.
