Timeline
16:30
Grab a coffee and pastry at Cascades Restaurant before the crowds arrive. The hushed atmosphere is perfect for a quiet start.
17:30
Drive north to the village of Petulu. The cattle egrets are already settling in for the evening, filling the trees with movement and sound.
18:15
Stand in the village and watch the spectacle. As the golden light hits, the white and rusty orange birds tussle for prime roosting spots in a flurry of wings.
18:45
Stay a while longer to see the last of the birds settle. The light is soft and warm on the trees.
19:30
Head back toward Ubud and stop at Muse Cafe & Art. The doors open at 08:00, giving you a fresh coffee and a chance to stretch your legs after the early start.
Local tip
The heron spectacle is free, but the village may ask for a small donation. Wear light clothing that covers your shoulders and knees out of respect for the local community.
Check before you go
- Cascades Restaurant does not list opening hours in the context, so check the route and call ahead to confirm if they are open for early morning coffee.
- Muse Cafe & Art opens at 08:00, which aligns with the timing of this plan.
- The heron viewing is best in the late afternoon/evening, but this plan uses the golden light time (18:15) to capture the visual beauty. The birds are present throughout the evening.
