    Vepsä Island

Take the ferry from the river Aura to Vepsä Island. The trip takes about an hour, leaving you plenty of time to settle in before the sun dips. The island is open from 1 June to 31 August, so this plan only works in summer. You will need a return ferry ticket (€16) and if you plan to stay overnight, cabin rates range from €55 to €90 or a tent site for €5 per person.

    Vepsä Island

Walk up to the rugged rock vantage point. The climb is short but rewarding. As you ascend, you pass the former hiding place of smugglers, which now houses modern hobbies and equipment. Look around for geocaches if you enjoy a bit of treasure hunting. The path leads to a clear view of the glittering waters and the Airisto landscape.

  3. 22:42

    Vepsä Island

Watch the sunset. On 15 July, the sun sets toward the NW at 22:42. The golden light begins around 21:28, so you will have over an hour of warm, glowing light to enjoy the view before the sun actually dips below the horizon. The child-safe beach is nearby if you want to dip your toes in the water while waiting.

    Vepsä Island

End the evening with a sauna bath or a barbecue if you have arranged one. The island offers these facilities for visitors. If you did not bring food, check the route for ferry schedules back to Turku, as the last ferry may not wait indefinitely. Miniature golf is also available if you want a final bit of activity.

Local tip

The ferry leaves from the river Aura. Make sure to check the return schedule before you head up the rock, especially since the island is only accessible by boat during the summer season.
