Timeline
14:43
Pick up a coffee or a cheap beer at Daily News. It is open early enough to serve you before the evening rush, and it is the closest spot to the church.
14:58
Walk to St Michael's Church. The 10-minute stroll from the Market Square area brings you to the base of the towering neogothic structure designed by Lars Sonck. Enter the church to feel the quiet atmosphere inside while the light outside begins to shift.
15:28
Head to Urheilupuisto Sports Park. This is the key viewing spot. The park is positioned so that St Michael's Church lies to the northwest, meaning the setting sun in the southwest will frame the church beautifully against the sky. Find a spot near the Paavo Nurmi Stadium with a clear line of sight.
15:58
Watch the sunset. At 15:58, the sun sets toward the southwest, casting a final glow on the church spire. Enjoy the golden light that started around 14:19 and lingers as the sky darkens.
16:43
End the evening at Alvar. This bar is located in a building designed by Alvar Aalto and is open until 02:00. It offers a comfortable atmosphere with a large selection of beer and free wireless internet, making it a perfect place to unwind after the walk.
Local tip
The walk from the church to the sports park takes about 17 minutes. If you want to stretch your legs, take the path through the park rather than cutting through the city streets. Check the route for the most direct path if you are short on time.
