Timeline
15:47
Start at Şişman, a central café that is open late. It is one part family-friendly and the other men-only, so pick a seat that suits you. Order a drink and settle in as the afternoon light begins to fade.
16:47
Walk 13 minutes ENE to Kalepark. This park sits directly in the path of the setting sun. Find a spot on the edge facing WSW to watch the light hit the Genoese ruins of Kalepark Fortress.
17:17
The sun sets toward the WSW at 17:17. Stay for the golden hour as the sky changes colour over the shambles of the old castle. The fortress was rebuilt by the Genoese in 1306 and was once called 'beautiful castle' (Leonkastron), though its ruined state tells a different story.
18:17
Walk 12 minutes WSW back toward the city center to Trabzon Art House. The museum closes at 21:00, so you have plenty of time to wander through the cultural centre housed in the former city governor's mansion before it shuts its doors for the night.
Local tip
Kalepark Fortress is a ruin, so wear sturdy shoes for the walk in the park. Şişman is open until 01:30, so you can linger there after sunset if you prefer not to move on.
