Timeline

  1. 10:00

    Idegahama Beach

Start at Idegahama Beach. Wait for the sun to warm the silica sand, then walk across it. The heat makes the sand sing beneath your feet, a melody worshipped by locals for centuries.

  2. 10:45

    Natsudomari Beach

Walk 28 minutes east-northeast to Natsudomari Beach. Look out over the water for the female divers (ama) who have used their unique method to catch fish here for more than 400 years.

  3. 11:15

    Idegahama Beach

Return to Idegahama Beach for a quiet moment to reflect on the sounds and sights of the coast before heading back to Aoya Station.

Local tip

The sand at Idegahama is best when hot. Arrive mid-morning to ensure the sun has warmed the silica enough to create the singing effect.
