Timeline
10:00
Enter the Mitsui Memorial Museum. The building itself dates back to 1926 and houses a collection of Eastern antiques and tea ceremony items. Arriving at opening ensures you have the space to yourself.
10:45
Walk 34 minutes to Kitanomaru Park. It is connected to the East Gardens and offers a convenient, quiet stroll. You can see the Nippon Budōkan from here if you look for it.
11:30
Head back toward the landmark area and walk 9 minutes to Tsujihan. Order the Kaisen-dong. The key is to ask for the stock poured over the rice with a little left at the bottom, which is the shop's specific style.
12:00
End your morning with a browse at Maruzen bookshop, a 11-minute walk away. Look for the 'Books on Japan' section. It is noted as the best bet for English language books in the city.
Local tip
The museum is closed on Mondays. If you are visiting on a Monday, plan for a different day or start your walk in Kitanomaru Park first.
