Timeline
15:00
Grab a pancake at Café Crepp. It is just a short walk from the Botanic Garden and open late enough for this timing. The French-themed café serves delicious pancakes, perfect for a quick energy boost before the walk.
15:25
Walk up Toome Hill. This historic spot features many monuments, statues, and historical buildings. It is the highest point in Tartu and offers the best vantage point for the sunset. The hill is located to the SW of the Botanic Garden area, making it a straightforward walk from your starting point.
15:55
Watch the sun set. On 15 January, the sun sets toward the SW at 15:55. Toome Hill faces the right direction to catch the golden light and the final moments of daylight over the city.
16:25
End your evening at the Estonian National Museum. Located north of the city centre, it is easily reachable from Toome Hill. The museum is open until 18:00 on Sundays, or you can simply admire the striking architecture of the new building from the outside as the lights come on.
Local tip
The walk from the Botanic Garden area to Toome Hill takes about 30 minutes. Dress warmly in January as the wind can be chilly near the top of the hill.
