Sunset at West Pier, then dinner and drinks

Watch the sun dip below the horizon from Taketomi’s best vantage point, then head back for a late meal and a cocktail.

Timeline

  1. 17:16

    Shidame-kan

Grab dinner at Shidame-kan, the cafe-restaurant just below the Nagomi-no-tō tower. Their rafti-don is a heavy, porky favorite that will stick with you through the evening chill.

  2. 17:56

    West Pier

Walk nine minutes west to the disused West Pier. This is the island’s premier sunset-watching spot, where villagers once launched canoes. Find a spot on the concrete and watch the sun set toward the WSW.

  3. 19:01

    Bar Take-To-Me

Head back toward the village center for a drink at Bar Take-To-Me. It is an open-air wooden platform surrounded by hibiscus flowers. Order an awamori cocktail and kick back in the plastic lawn chairs as the island winds down.

Local tip

The West Pier is the best spot for the sunset, but you need to stay overnight to secure a good position if you want to be there right at the moment. The walk from the pier back to the bar is short and flat.

Check before you go

  • Shidame-kan closes at 22:00, so arrive early enough to eat before then.
  • Bar Take-To-Me is open until 23:30.
  • The West Pier is accessible 24/7.
