Golden Hour at West Pier

The best sunset view on Taketomi isn’t at the beach. It’s from a disused pier where locals once launched canoes.

Timeline

    Shidame-kan

Grab a rafti-don at Shidame-kan. This cafe-restaurant sits just below the Nagomi-no-to tower and serves a rice bowl dripping with porky goodness. It is the perfect fuel before the evening chill sets in.

  2. 17:16

    Kaiji Beach

Walk down to Kaiji Beach. This is the island’s other famous white sand spot, formed from crushed crustacean shells. Stroll along the water’s edge to clear your head and enjoy the fading light before heading to the main event.

  3. 18:01

    West Pier

Settle in at West Pier. This disused pier is Taketomi’s best sunset-watching spot. The sun sets toward the WSW, casting a warm glow over the water. Find a spot on the concrete and wait for the sky to turn.

  4. 19:01

    Bar Take-To-Me

End the night at Bar Take-To-Me. This open-air wooden platform is piled with plastic lawn chairs and surrounded by hibiscus flowers. Order an awamori straight or as a cocktail to watch the stars come out.

Local tip

The West Pier has no lighting after dark. Bring a small flashlight if you stay late.
