Arrive at Panmen city gate before the sun crests the horizon. The southwest corner of the old walled city is quiet, giving you space to watch the sky lighten over the combined water and land gate structure. The gates open at 07:30, so you will be waiting just outside the main ticketed area, using the perimeter for your view.

Once the sun is up, enter the gate complex. The morning light hits the 300-meter wall and the ponds nicely. Feed the koi for ¥2 and take in the garden with its pavilions. The ticket is ¥25 and the site closes at 17:30, but you will be leaving long before then.
07:46
Walk 9 minutes northeast to The Bookworm. It is a calm spot for coffee and food, a nice break from the historic sites. You can read from their English book collection or just use the free wireless internet to check your route back.
Local tip
The gate opens at 07:30. Plan your arrival so you are outside enjoying the pre-dawn light, then head in once the doors open. The Bookworm is a solid alternative to a crowded bar if you want a quiet place to digest your morning.
