Art and Afternoon Light at the Staatsgalerie

Stuttgart’s modern and old art collections sit side by side, and the best time to see them is when the galleries first open. Grab a coffee nearby, explore the free permanent exhibits, then head to a quiet square to watch the day wind down.

Timeline

  1. 10:00

    Universum

Start with an espresso at Universum. This rock club is located inside the underground stop "Charlottenplatz". It is on the right way out at the exit signed with "Landtag". It is a quick, caffeine-fueled start before the crowds arrive.

  2. 10:15

    Staatsgalerie Stuttgart

Walk to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. The galleries open at 10:00 on your day (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday). The permanent exhibits are free on Wednesdays and Saturdays. You can walk inside from the "Alte Staatsgalerie" (Old: Art from 1500 to 1900) directly to the "Neue Staatsgalerie" (New: Modern art).

  3. 11:30

    Biergarten im Schlossgarten

Head to the Biergarten im Schlossgarten for lunch. It is a beautiful setting with reasonable prices. You can order cafeteria style or sit down to be waited on. The entrees are €3-10 and drinks start at €2.

  4. 12:15

    Schillerplatz

End your morning at Schillerplatz. Named after the great poet Friedrich Schiller, whose statue stands in the middle of the square. It is a short walk from the gallery and a peaceful spot to rest your feet.

Local tip

The Staatsgalerie is closed on Mondays. If you are visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday, the permanent exhibits are free, so you can spend more time exploring the collections.
