Get to the rodeo grounds early. The gates open at noon on Saturdays and the event starts at 1 PM, but you just need to be on the premises to access the area. Check entry requirements for Ft Huachuca if you are driving.

    Reservoir Hill Overlook

Walk to the Reservoir Hill Overlook. It is a short 52-minute walk from the anchor, heading southeast. This spot offers clear views over the Fort and the neighboring Whetstone Mountains, perfect for framing the landscape as the light shifts.

  3. 17:04

    Reservoir Hill Overlook

Stay for the golden light. The sun sets toward the WSW in January, WNW in spring and summer, and due West in October. The golden light phase gives the desert landscape a warm, soft glow before the sun dips below the horizon.

Local tip

The walk from the rodeo grounds to the overlook is substantial. Plan your timing carefully so you are not rushing up the hill. There are no food or drink options listed in the immediate vicinity, so bring water and plan for dinner elsewhere after you descend.
