Timeline

  1. 16:55

    Buffalo Corral Riding Stables

Grab a coffee or a snack at the stable's counter before heading out. The facility is on Fort Huachuca, so ensure you have your admission documents ready. Note that the last ride begins at 2:45 PM, so this pre-sunset window is perfect for a quick bite without committing to a long ride.

  2. 17:25

    Reservoir Hill Overlook

Walk to Reservoir Hill Overlook. It is a 47-minute walk from the stables to the south-southeast, but you can take a vehicle or shorter path if available. Settle in on the ridge. The view looks over the Fort and the neighboring Whetstone Mountains, offering a clear western horizon.

  3. 17:40

    Reservoir Hill Overlook

Watch the sunset. On January 15, the sun dips toward the WSW at 17:40. The sky will shift from the golden light that started at 17:04 to deep twilight. Stay for the quiet afterglow.

Local tip

The walk to the overlook is long (47 minutes). Plan your arrival at the stables early enough to allow for travel time to the hill. Bring a jacket as desert temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
