Arrive at the preserve entrance well before dawn. The lot is small with only 27 spaces, so coming early guarantees a spot and allows you to check in quietly. The trails are open early, giving you time to settle in before the main bird activity begins.
05:12
Walk the easy trails into the canyon. This is the prime time for hummingbird activity. The quiet morning air helps you spot the 14 different species that call this place home before the day gets busy.
05:27
Watch the sunrise filter through the canyon walls. The first light reveals the details of the forest and the birds. Enjoy the stillness as the day officially begins.
06:12
Stop by the small bookshop inside the preserve. Pick up a guide or a souvenir to remember the morning. It is a convenient place to rest your feet and reflect on the birds you saw.
Local tip
Parking is strictly limited to the designated lot. Do not park along the roadside. If the lot is full, you will have to leave and try again later, so arriving early is essential.
Check before you go
- Check the seasonal opening hours. In July (summer), the preserve is open from 8 AM to 5 PM. In April, it is also open from 8 AM to 5 PM. Ensure your visit aligns with these times, especially for the bookshop and trail access.
- Bring your own water and binoculars. The preserve does not provide rentals.
