Escape the Peak District crowds for a steep, solitary climb where the views are earned, not watched.

Best time: noneAbout 240 min

Timeline

  1. 09:00

    Wharncliffe Crags

Walk the half-mile from the bus stop along Station Road in Deepcar. The climb is tough and steep, so start early when the air is fresh and the paths are quiet. This spot is often overlooked by tourists heading to the more famous Peak District sites, leaving you with space to focus on the rock.

  2. 11:00

    Wharncliffe Crags

Take in the view from the crags. Since this area is overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, you will likely have the scenery to yourself. The climbing here is known for being tough, so enjoy the sense of isolation and the raw character of the stone.

  3. 12:00

    Wharncliffe Crags

Head back toward the bus stop or Station Road for a break. Since there are no listed food or drink shops in the immediate vicinity, check the route for the SL1 or 57 bus back toward Sheffield city centre to find lunch options after your climb.

Local tip

The bus routes SL1 and SL1a from Middlewood Supertram station are more regular than the 57 from the city centre. Check the route times in advance to ensure you catch the ride back.
