Timeline

Arrive at the temple grounds. Take a taxi from the centre of town or catch the TransJateng rapid transit bus heading towards Bawen. The driver will know exactly where to drop you. Wander the grounds and shrines representing Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana traditions while the sky is still bright. The development began in the 1950s, so the site has a long, layered history to absorb.
17:47
Find a spot near the 45m Pagoda Avalokitesvara. This seven-tiered structure is the tallest of its kind in Indonesia. Position yourself so the WSW horizon is in view. The light will start to soften here, casting long shadows across the pagoda's tiers.
18:02
The sun sets toward the WSW. Watch the light fade from the pagoda's upper tiers as the day ends. The atmosphere shifts as the noise of the city fades into the background.
18:32
Stay for a while after the sun has gone. The temple remains open and the silence allows you to reflect on the view. When you are ready, take the taxi back to town or head to the nearest bus stop for the TransJateng line.
Local tip
Since there are no food or drink shops listed nearby, bring water and a small snack with you. The temple is a popular site, so expect other visitors to be present during sunset hours.
