Alki Sunset: Chowder, Light, and the Viewpoint

A short, timed walk from warm food to cool twilight views.

Best time: 15 JanAbout 90 min

Timeline

  1. 15:45

Duke's Chowder House at Alki Beach

Grab a bowl of chowder at Duke's Chowder House at Alki Beach. The upper deck offers great views if open, but the food is the draw. Check that it is open; in January it closes at 22:00, so you have plenty of time.

  2. 16:05

    Alki Beach Park

Walk across the street to Alki Beach Park. The sand is busy and fun. Find a spot on the beach facing the water. The sun sets toward the WSW, which aligns with the view from here.

  3. 16:45

    Alki Beach Park

Watch the sunset. The sky turns gold and the city lights begin to flicker on across the water.

  4. 17:00

    Alki Beach Park

Stroll along the beach path toward the west end. The night view of Downtown Seattle is one of the best in the city.

  5. 17:15

    Alki Point Lighthouse

End at Alki Point Lighthouse. It is a short walk from the beach and offers a final, quiet look at the darkening horizon.

Local tip

The beach path is long. Keep the walk short by staying near the central beach area before heading to the lighthouse. Duke's is often crowded, so go early.
